Injuries as an Athlete

As an athlete, injuries can be very scary and frustrating no matter how severe they are. When I roll my ankle or have aches and pains anywhere in my body, which is pretty much every day as an athlete, I just ignore it and push through. However, sometimes that is not an option. During a track meet, I hurt my knee, and it wasn't something that I could just shake off. I had surgery to repair my ACL and meniscus and the healing process is nine months on average. So far, I am around five months post-surgery, and it has been a long and very challenging journey. It is very frustrating not being able to do the things that I want to do and not being able to practice and keep up with my teammates. Many thoughts also are daunting during the recovery process. Questions like “How will I be able to get back to the point I was at before surgery?” “How long will it take to recover?” and “Will I ever be able to perform how I used to?” are all thoughts that I have. It is hard on your body and mind to question your abilities and not to be able to move as much as you could before when you used to be so active. Recovery is a painful and hard process that you have to push through and work hard to get through.

  1. Nice post Paige! I agree that the process for an athlete after an injury is time consuming and hard. It can be very scary not knowing whether or not you will be able to do everything you could do before an injury. I like how you included some text about your personal experience to add to your blog post!

  2. Thank you for sharing. This is a great post. I'm sure its hard not being able to practice and play in games. Something that used to be an every day thing that you enjoyed is know stopped because of an injury. I know its hard too if you have to go to the games and watch everyone else play. When I had a concussion I had to sit on the sidelines while everyone else played. It was really frustrating to not be able to play. I hope you can recover fully to the way you were and quickly.

  3. I really enjoyed this post Paige and this was a great topic. I know how hard it can be sitting out of practices and meets, and how frustrating it can be. As someone who has had surgery and also had to sit out last year it was very frustrating and hard to do, and like you said I am constantly wondering how I'll ever be back to were I was. I also loved how you talked about not just the recovery physically but mentally as well. I hope you will be back bette than ever after you are cleared to compete again and can't wait to watch you.

  4. I can really relate to this post. i have had a few injuries in my track career. I had hyper extended my elbow several times throwing shot put. this worried me because i was not able to throw for a couple weeks and even now i cant straighten my arm. It was scary and still kind of is because i still cant extend it all the way. but it is getting better and better.
